1. I do not mean to imply that the concepts we develop in this chapter are all ones that Macmurray did not develop, rather, I mean only to say that I am using a conversation with Buber as the portal through which I may bring these insights into covenant epistemology.
2. Walter Kaufmann, in his translator’s introduction, helpfully suggests that there are a couple other possible word pairs. One is the It-It: “they study without experiencing; they have no time to have a self, no subjectivity; a community of solid scholars with no room for a core.” Buber, I and Thou, 12.
